Adaptogen & CBD Hot Cocoa Recipe

My typical evening routine generally includes a nice warming drink to relax my mind and let go of the day. My normal go-to is a cup of the signature Hazel & Thyme tea blend, it's packed full of nourishing and relaxing herbs like nettles, chamomile, passionflower, and lemon balm, which are perfect for the evening and for de-stressing after a long day. 


However, with all this snow and cold weather lately, I’ve been craving something a little sweeter and a bit more nostalgic- hot cocoa! Now, when I say hot cocoa, I do NOT mean the sweet instant mix stuff from the days of my childhood. While that has a certain place in time, I now know that it's filled with awful artificial sweeteners and flavors which are terrible for my body! Instead of the instant stuff, this hot cocoa is truly a treat- some of the best things take time, right? It's vegan, naturally sweetened, and (bonus) made with adaptogenic* herbs and mushrooms.

*An adaptogen is a natural substance considered to help the body adapt to stress. (Oxford Dictionary) 

A cozy cup of adaptogenic hot cocoa goes perfectly with a crochet project and a snuggly wool blanket.

Adaptogenic Hot Cocoa -1 cup vegan milk - Tip: Chocolate flavored milk will make it even yummier (My favorite is Ripple pea milk- it froths up so nice and thick, and doesn’t have that “burnt’ taste that almond milk tends to take on after heating) -1 tablespoon cacao powder -1 1/2 tablespoons dairy free chocolate chips (omit if using chocolate flavored milk) -1 teaspoon of real maple syrup (optional) -1/2 teaspoon reishi mushroom powder -1 teaspoon ashwagandha tincture -CBD oil or chocolate (optional, see note below)* Warm up milk, cacao powder, chocolate chips, and reishi powder in a sauce pan on the stove over medium heat. (optional: use an electric frother like this one to get it frothy and fluffy!) Once warm, stir in maple syrup, ashwagandha tincture, and CBD (if using).  I hope you enjoy this evening adaptogenic hot cocoa and find some time to relax and breathe! Note: *I like to add CBD to my daily routine, and I think it goes great with this hot cocoa. Personally, I’ve found a lot of benefits from using CBD, including a reduction in stress and anxiety, and improved sleep, among other things. There’s a lot of buzz going around about CBD, and it seems like so many companies are popping up with CBD products, but just like any other food, herb, or health product, it is SO IMPORTANT to find a reputable company who uses high quality ingredients, and that tests their products for quality.  The two brands I really like are Farmacology and Blue Ridge Hemp Co. From Farmacology, I use the Full Spectrum Basic Blend, and either add it to my morning coffee (or my evening hot cocoa!), or a few drops on my tongue.  Blue Ridge Hemp Co has a few edible CBD treats including chocolate, and a spreadable ghee (vegan) that is really tasty on toast, or on a spoon! The chocolate ghee is really good in hot cocoa or coffee.
